Jezebel killed Naboth and told him to take possession of his vineyard. Ahab went out to take possession of it with joy. Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, “Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth; he is gone down to take possession of it. And thou shalt say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Didst thou kill Naboth, to take possession of it? Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth, shall dogs lick up thy blood.” Then Ahab said unto Elijah, “Am I found in thine hand, O mine enemy? And Elijah said, Because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD, therefore thou art found in mine hand. And the LORD said, Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will cut off thy seed from thee, and will cut off from Ahab every male in Israel, from small to great. Therefore I will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because thou hast made Israel to sin, to provoke me to anger, saith the LORD. And concerning Jezebel thus saith the LORD, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel: and him that dieth of Ahab in the city shall the dogs eat: And there was none like unto Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the sight of the LORD, stirred up by Jezebel his wife. And he did very abominably, and made idols, after the manner of the Amorites, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. And it came to pass, when Ahab heard these words, that he rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and mourned: that the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, Seest thou how Ahab feareth me, and humbleth himself? Because he hath humbled himself by fearing me, I will turn away the evil in his days, and will bring it upon his house in the days of his son.
Beloved, King Ahab sinned in the vineyard of Naboth, but when he heard the word of God through Elijah, he was deeply moved and humbled himself and cried out to God. Therefore, he was delivered from the evil that the LORD was about to bring. God forgave Ahab because he was full of love and mercy.
Beloved, if we confess our sins before God and cry out, God is merciful to us. He even gave his life on the cross to make us holy. Therefore, let us live in a way that pleases him.
